Lacoste is a French fashion company, founded in 1933 by tennis player Rene Lacoste. After initially only having produced the tennis shirt, now produces even more clothing, shoes, fragrances and eyewear. The headquarters are in Paris, and most production is done in Troyes, but factories are also found in Peru, Morocco, Italy and El Salvador. Lacoste is owned 65% by the Lacoste family. Lacoste is now a multinational company with sales of almost 900 million euros and sells products in 109 countries. 63% of the sales are clothing, and 38% are footwear and other products. The crocodile is the brand's symbol and is one of the most recognised logos having a distinguished sign to all Lacoste shoes.Lacoste - clothes and shoes with roots in the sport of tennis.
Lacoste's history dates to 1925 and the Davis Cup match between France and Australia in Boston. Between some workouts strolled the French team in town. Rene saw a bag in crocodile skin, which he became very fond of. René made a bet with the captain Pierre Gillou, where he would get the bag if he won their remaining matches. Rene lost the bet and did not win the case. An American journalist, however, had picked up the story and wrote: "The young Lacoste did not win the leather bag, but fought anyway like a real crocodile". Lacoste became "the Alligator". He had a friend draw the later classic Lacoste logo and placed it on shirts and blazers he wore during the game. Due to injuries René Lacoste was forced to end his career in the early 1930's. He then had the advice from a friend to start a company that made clothes with his famous crocodile logo. They made Lacoste and in 1933 he founded together with a businessman André Gillier Le Societe Chemise Lacoste. In the 1950s the company expanded dramatically, when it began making clothes in colours other than white (the traditional tennis colour). René's son Bernard took over the company in 1963. After the enormous success (particularly in the USA) in the 60s - and 70's the company began in the 90s to lose market share and a long term strategy for the revitalisation and development was adopted. 1996 Rene Lacoste died, aged 92.Lacoste trainers and tennis shoes are favourites among those who like classic brands.
